A Transient Living Room

A Project by the Roman Lakers Art Collective

The Roman Lakers art collective began with the loss of a place and the diaspora of a community. In 2019, the Roma Lake Art District in Shunyi, Beijing, was cleared for redevelopment, forcing the young artists who had lived there for years to disperse. In the aftermath, they came together again of their own accord and formed a new artistic community.

A Transient Living Room is a collective artistic action by the group. The exhibition presents 17 sets of works made by 11 artists over 120 hours of continuous, collaborative on-site work. As temporary hosts of the space, the artists transformed the white cube into a theatre where life is unfolding. They sought the re-creation of their shared memories of Roma Lake and storytelling about how young artists live and make art today.
